Tax Form 1098-T Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Question:
What are the FAQs for the 1098-T tax form?
Answer:
  1. What is a Form 1098-T?
The 1098-T form is used by eligible educational institutions to report information about their students to the IRS, as required by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. Eligible educational institutions are required to submit the student's name, address, taxpayer’s identification number, and enrollment/academic status. Beginning in 2003, educational institutions must also report amounts to the IRS pertaining to qualified tuition and related expenses. This includes scholarships and/or grants, whether they are taxable or not. Furthermore, a 1098-T form is provided to each applicable student and is an informational form only. It serves to alert students that they may be eligible for federal income tax education credits such as, the American Opportunity, Lifetime Learning, and Hope credit. A 1098-T form should not be considered as a tax opinion or advice. There is no IRS requirement that you must claim the tuition and fees deduction or an education credit. Claiming education tax benefits is a voluntary decision for those who may qualify. We recommend you seek the advice of a tax professional if you have questions regarding the tax treatment of any items reported on your form 1098T.
  2. What are the American Opportunity, Hope, and Lifetime Learning tax credits?
These credits are explained in IRS Publication 970 "Tax Benefits for Education" and Chapter 35 of IRS Publication 17, which can be found on the IRS website. http://www.irs.gov/
  3. Do I qualify for these credits?
The university may not offer any tax advice to our students. Please seek the advice of a tax professional.
  4. Did you send a copy of this form to the IRS?
Yes. Section 6050S of the Internal Revenue Code, as enacted by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, requires institutions to file information returns to assist taxpayers and the Internal Revenue Service in determining eligibility for the American Opportunity, Hope, and Lifetime Learning education tax credits.
  5. When will I receive my Form 1098-T?
If you are eligible to receive a 1098-T form, it will be available on your student website by January 31st. If you have consented to receive your 1098-T form via the US Postal Service please allow an additional 1-3 weeks for delivery.
  6. Why didn’t I receive a Form 1098-T?
There could be many reasons why you did not receive a 1098-T form this year. The most common reason is due to no payments being posted to your account within the 1098-T reporting year. Please note the university reports qualified tuition and related expenses by Payments Received. Therefore, if there were no payments received by the university within the 1098-T reporting year, you may not receive one.
  7. I misplaced my copy of the Form 1098-T. How do I get a reprint of my 1098-T form?
All students can access a copy of their Form 1098-T via their student eCampus at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu/. Once you are logged in select the Account tab, then under Payments, click the Tax Forms/1098-T link.
  8. My address listed on the 1098-T has changed. Will this affect me?
No. The address shown on Form 1098-T is irrelevant for IRS income tax filing purposes. The single most important piece of identifying information on the form is your Social Security or taxpayer's identification number (TIN).
  9. Where can I obtain more information about education tax credits?
For more information on the education credits, please call the IRS at 1-800-TAX-FORM or 1-800- 829-3676. You can also visit their website at http://www.irs.gov/
